I love this unit's functionality. It's very nice not to have to get up from the dinner table and walk over to the phone just to learn that it's a telemarketer calling. The ability to record a name to be announced instead of the number makes this unit much more useful than the kind that can only announce the caller's phone number.

Longevity of the unit leaves much to be desired. We bought three of them in five years, and each eventually failed. I suspected they are particularly susceptible to transients during thunderstorms. With our third unit we bought a surge suppressor with phone line protection, but the SHA9191 failed after only 75 days. Note that the seller, TechRenew, provides only a 7 day warranty for this device. The manufacturer (Philips) honored the one-year warranty, but refunded only the net purchase price, not the shipping and handling cost. This model is no longer manufactured and Philips cannot provide a replacement unit under warranty. In all three cases, the failure mode we saw is that the SJA9191 goes permanently "off hook," so that our phone line is kept busy whenever the unit is connected to it.)

despite its longevity problems, I've now bought a fourth SJA9191, a used one I got on eBay for $22.

This does the job but the sound quality is not good. It's hard to understand who is calling especially when you are in another room. It keeps all the phone numbers of people that called which is great.
